Canton Tower

Iconic Guangzhou

Canton Tower

广州塔

1 hr 30 min09:00 - 22:00222 Binjiang East Road, Xinhong Community, Chigang Subdistrict, Haizhu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province

Canton Tower is one of Guangzhou's defining landmarks and, at 604 metres (1,982 ft), remains one of the tallest towers in the world. Even if you do not go to the top, chances are you will spot it repeatedly during your time in Guangzhou. The main observation levels sit around 450 metres (1,500 ft) above the city, with both indoor and outdoor viewing areas. The outdoor deck is home to the Bubble Tram — small transparent pods that slowly circle the edge of the tower high above Guangzhou, and one of the tower's more unique experiences. If that still does not feel high enough, you can pay extra to go even higher to a small observation area near the top of the tower. Day and night visits feel completely different. On a clear day you can see across Guangzhou and beyond, giving a real sense of the scale of the city. At night the skyline transforms into a sea of lights, with Zhujiang New Town and the Pearl River especially standing out. There are three restaurants near the top of the tower, including Chinese fine dining, French cuisine, and a Mediterranean buffet. They are far from the best restaurants in Guangzhou and are not particularly good value for money — but the views from the revolving restaurants are hard to beat. One final thing: Guangzhou locals often enjoy Canton Tower as much from a distance as from the top. Its changing colours and lighting make it one of the city's defining features after dark.

Shamian Island

Historic Guangzhou

Shamian Island

沙面岛

2 hrs08:00 - 20:00Liwan District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China

Shamian Island offers a very different side of Guangzhou. Once a French and British concession established in the mid-1800s, this small historic district developed separately from the old city and today retains a distinctly European atmosphere that feels unlike anywhere else in Guangzhou. The area is largely pedestrianised, with tree-lined streets, quiet squares, and colonial-era buildings blending European architectural styles with local Chinese influences. It is one of Guangzhou's most pleasant places for a slower walk. The island is especially popular for wedding photography. Visit during the day and you will likely see couples in elaborate dress posing for photos — sometimes traditional Chinese styles, sometimes full Western wedding attire — adding to the atmosphere of the area. There are cafés, galleries, small shops, and places to stop for refreshments, including a surprisingly elegant Starbucks set inside one of the historic buildings. Shamian works particularly well if you want a break from Guangzhou's skyscrapers and modern business districts. It feels calmer, older, and more reflective of Guangzhou's international trading history. Expect your driver to drop you off at the island entrance, where you can just wander in any direction. The island is small and easily walkable. Just let your driver know when you are ready and get picked up at the same place, or if you are hungry, on the southern edge of the island is The White Swan Hotel where you can get high quality (if expensive) Dim Sum before asking your driver to pick you up at the hotel lobby entrance.
