Historic Guangzhou
沙面岛
Shamian Island offers a very different side of Guangzhou. Once a French and British concession established in the mid-1800s, this small historic district developed separately from the old city and today retains a distinctly European atmosphere that feels unlike anywhere else in Guangzhou. The area is largely pedestrianised, with tree-lined streets, quiet squares, and colonial-era buildings blending European architectural styles with local Chinese influences. It is one of Guangzhou's most pleasant places for a slower walk. The island is especially popular for wedding photography. Visit during the day and you will likely see couples in elaborate dress posing for photos — sometimes traditional Chinese styles, sometimes full Western wedding attire — adding to the atmosphere of the area. There are cafés, galleries, small shops, and places to stop for refreshments, including a surprisingly elegant Starbucks set inside one of the historic buildings. Shamian works particularly well if you want a break from Guangzhou's skyscrapers and modern business districts. It feels calmer, older, and more reflective of Guangzhou's international trading history. Expect your driver to drop you off at the island entrance, where you can just wander in any direction. The island is small and easily walkable. Just let your driver know when you are ready and get picked up at the same place, or if you are hungry, on the southern edge of the island is The White Swan Hotel where you can get high quality (if expensive) Dim Sum before asking your driver to pick you up at the hotel lobby entrance.
